String of Pearls Beads Shriveling? Underwatering or Overwatering?
When your String of Pearls beads start shriveling, the cause could be either too little OR too much water — and the wrong fix kills it. Here's the diagnostic.
Tell Underwatering From Overwatering
- Beads wrinkled, soil bone dry, plant looks limp: Underwatering. Soak the pot.
- Beads wrinkled, soil wet, beads feel mushy: Overwatering + root rot. Repot in cactus mix.
- Beads bursting open, leaking liquid: Severe overwatering. Emergency repot.
The Right Watering Schedule
Water every 2–3 weeks when soil is completely dry. Bottom-water for 15 minutes, drain fully. String of Pearls are succulent vines that hate sitting wet but also can't survive prolonged drought.
Care Conditions
- Bright indirect light — at least 400 fc. South window 2 feet back is ideal.
- Terra cotta pot with drainage.
- Cactus + perlite mix.
- Trim leggy bare vines to encourage fuller growth.
Frequently asked questions
Will shriveled beads plump back up?
Yes if the cause was drought and you catch it within a week. Plump-back happens 24–72 hours after a soak. Beads damaged by rot don't recover.
Why is my String of Pearls losing beads?
Usually overwatering. Beads pop off the vine when overhydrated. Check soil moisture before watering — wait until completely dry.
