How to Get Monstera Fenestrations Faster Indoors (The Light Trick)
Light Intensity Required for Fenestrations
Monstera deliciosa needs at least 400 foot-candles (fc) for 8+ hours daily to start splitting new leaves. Below that, every new leaf will be solid heart-shaped with no holes. Most U.S. apartment 'bright indirect' spots actually measure 150–250 fc — well under the threshold.
How to Measure Without a Light Meter
- Download the free Light Meter app on iPhone or Android.
- Place your phone where the monstera sits, screen facing the light source.
- Read the lux value, divide by 10.76 to get foot-candles.
- Below 400 fc? Move closer to the window or add a grow light.
The Indoor Fix That Works
Place a 30W LED grow light (full spectrum, ~$30 on Amazon) 12 inches above the plant, running 10 hours a day. This adds ~600 fc of usable light. Within 2–3 leaf cycles (about 6–10 weeks), new leaves will start showing splits. By month 6 you'll have proper fenestrations.
Frequently asked questions
At what age do monsteras start fenestrating?
Age matters less than light. A well-lit 2-year-old monstera fenestrates better than a 5-year-old in low light. Once light is right, fenestrations usually appear within 3–4 new leaves.
Can I cut a leaf to force fenestrations?
No. Cutting damages the leaf and doesn't trigger fenestration in future growth. Fenestrations are a developmental response to light — they can't be forced mechanically.
Why do my new leaves come out smaller than the old ones?
Smaller new leaves usually indicate insufficient light or nutrients. Boost light first, then feed every 6 weeks with diluted balanced fertilizer (10-10-10 at half strength).
