Mealybugs on Houseplants: 14-Day Eradication Plan (US Indoor Growers)
Identifying Mealybugs vs. Other Pests
Mealybugs look like tiny white cotton tufts (1–4 mm). They cluster where leaves meet stems, on undersides of leaves, and at the soil line. If you press one with a tissue, it leaves an orange-red smear. Spider mites are smaller and webby; scale is hard and shell-like; fungus gnats fly.
The 14-Day Plan
- Day 1: Isolate the plant immediately. Move it 6 feet from other plants.
- Day 1: Mix 1 cup of 70% isopropyl alcohol (CVS, $4) with 1 quart of water and 1 tsp dish soap.
- Days 1, 4, 7, 10, 14: Wipe every leaf, stem, and node with the solution using a Q-tip or soft cloth. Get under leaves.
- Day 1: Drench the soil with the same solution to kill soil-dwelling nymphs.
- Day 7: Repot in fresh soil — this removes any eggs in the existing soil.
- Day 14: Final inspection. If still seeing mealybugs, repeat the cycle.
Why They Came Back Last Time
You missed eggs. Mealybug eggs hatch every 7–10 days, which is why one-time treatments fail. The 14-day cycle with 5 treatments covers two egg-laying cycles. Skip even one treatment and they bounce back.
Frequently asked questions
Are mealybugs harmful to humans or pets?
No. They feed only on plant sap. But their honeydew secretion attracts ants and grows sooty black mold, which damages plant leaves and looks awful.
Will neem oil work better than rubbing alcohol?
Neem works but takes longer and can burn leaves under direct light. Alcohol is faster, cheaper, and easier in U.S. apartments. Both work — choose based on availability.
Should I throw out the infested plant?
Only if you've tried two full 14-day cycles and they keep returning. Most mealybug infestations are beatable. Severely infested plants near healthy ones may justify disposal.
