How to Fix Leggy Pothos Stems (Bushy Again in 6 Weeks)
Step 1: Aggressive Pruning
Cut every leggy vine back to within 4 inches of the soil. Don't be timid — pothos recover from heavy pruning. Save the cuttings for propagation.
Step 2: Propagate the Cuttings
Cut each pruned vine into 4-inch segments with at least 2 leaves and 1 node each. Root in water for 2 weeks, then plant back into the same mother pot. This makes the mother visibly fuller within weeks.
Step 3: Fix the Root Cause (Light)
Pothos go leggy when they don't get enough light. Move to bright indirect light (300–500 fc). Without this fix, the plant goes leggy again. Add a grow light if your space is dim.
Frequently asked questions
How long until my pothos looks bushy?
6–8 weeks. The pruned mother stems push 2–3 new growth points each, and the planted-back cuttings start contributing leaves within 4 weeks.
Will hard pruning kill my pothos?
Almost impossible. Pothos can be cut back to bare stems and still recover fully. They're one of the most forgiving plants for aggressive pruning.
