How Often to Fertilize a Pothos Indoors (Real Schedule, USA)
Pothos are 'easy' partly because they tolerate neglect — but they grow 3x faster with the right fertilizer schedule. Here's the no-fluff schedule for U.S. apartments.
The Real Schedule
- Spring (Mar–May): Every 4 weeks, balanced 10-10-10 at HALF strength.
- Summer (Jun–Aug): Every 3 weeks, half strength.
- Fall (Sep–Oct): Every 6 weeks, half strength.
- Winter (Nov–Feb): Stop completely.
Why Half Strength Always
Fertilizer labels assume outdoor growing conditions. Indoor plants grow slower (less light) and can't process full-strength nutrients. Half strength = optimal absorption, no burn risk.
Best U.S. Fertilizers
- Espoma Indoor Plant Food (5-5-3, ~$8 at Home Depot)
- Miracle-Gro Liquid All Purpose (8-7-6) at half strength
- Worm castings (organic option, mix into top soil quarterly)
Frequently asked questions
Will my pothos die without fertilizer?
No — pothos survive on stored nutrients for months. But fertilized pothos grow visibly faster, with bigger, more variegated leaves.
Can I over-fertilize a pothos?
Yes. Signs: brown crispy leaf edges, white salt crust on soil. Flush the pot with plain water for 5 minutes and skip fertilizer for 8 weeks.
