Dracaena Marginata Brown Tips: Tap Water Is the Likely Culprit

Dracaena marginata is one of the most fluoride-sensitive houseplants — and U.S. tap water has just enough fluoride to slowly burn its leaf tips. Here's how to fix it.

Confirm It's Tap Water

Symptoms: every leaf tip identical brown, sharp transition from green to brown, white crust on soil surface, slow but steady worsening over months. If yes → tap water fluoride is the cause.

The 3-Step Fix

  1. Flush the pot with distilled or rainwater for 5 minutes.
  2. Switch all future watering to distilled, RO, or rainwater. Brita does NOT remove fluoride.
  3. Trim existing brown tips with scissors along the leaf curve. Leave 1mm brown to prevent further dieback.

Ongoing

Flush every 3 months even with filtered water. Fertilize only at half strength — dracaenas are fluoride-sensitive AND salt-sensitive.
