Best Soil for African Violets (from U.S. Big-Box Stores, 2026)
African violets need a specific light, airy soil mix — and you don't need to mail-order specialty media. Here's what to get at any U.S. big-box store.
DIY Mix (Best Performance)
By volume:
- 1 part African Violet Mix (Espoma or Miracle-Gro brand, ~$5)
- 1 part Perlite
- 1/2 part Sphagnum Peat Moss
Mix in a bucket. Should feel light, fluffy, and slightly damp when squeezed.
Pre-Made Picks
- Espoma African Violet Mix — slightly heavy out of the bag; lighten with extra perlite.
- Miracle-Gro African Violet Potting Mix — widely available, works as-is for most growers.
- FoxFarm Happy Frog — overkill for AVs but workable with extra perlite.
Why Not Regular Potting Mix
Standard potting soil holds too much water for African violets. Their roots rot fast. Always use a specialty AV mix or add perlite + peat to lighten regular soil.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I repot African violets?
Every 9–12 months. They like fresh soil — old soil compacts and stops draining. Repot into the same pot if not root-bound.
Can I use cactus soil for African violets?
No — cactus soil drains too fast and lacks the slight moisture retention AVs need. Stick with proper African violet mix.
